Tim & Jackie's attempt at Teaching

On Friday, we approached Inti about starting an English class for the children. We figured we weren't busy enough volunteering, learning Spanish, and seeing Peru on the weekend. Why not add developing an English class and teaching to the mix too.

The staff welcomed the idea and the children were extremely excited, so we spent most of the weekend working on it.

Again, thanks to everyone's generosity and Chad, a co-worker's prior English materials, we were able to pull together a folder with exercises, an English book, colored pencils, and a notebook for each child. Here's a picture of the materials (the coloring was one of the childrens).

Well, I think our first class was a success. We expected 8 children, made materials for 15, and had 17 participate. We spent Wednesday night pulling together 10 more books, folders, and notebooks for Thursday's class.

Jackie and I were amazed at the level of effort to prepare for a class, but certainly had no concept of what it would take to keep the attention of 17 excited children. If we had a second to breathe we would have taken a few pictures. At the end of Thursday's class, we played "Simon Says" with the initial words (palabras) that we taught them - Stop, Dance, Sit Down, Walk, Turn Around, Jump, and Run - their favorite.

In our first two weeks at Inti, I'm not sure how much of a difference we have made as of yet but they certainly are attached to us. Some days are more satisfying than others, but one thing we do know is that Inti is far louder with Jackie and Tim there. Hopefully, the children retain a little bit of English along the way too.
